[Touring a Russian Submarine]

[Outside the submarine]

When we were on the sky train in Vancouver, Brad spotted this submarine out the window. The following day, we went back to find it, and we took the tour.

This particular submarine was "retired" in 1993. When it was operational, it had a crew of approximately 78 men. The men who were selected to work on the submarines were not paid for the first three years of their assignment, and they were only allowed to shower once every four weeks.

Since the ceiling was so low, the tour guide made us wear these attractive yellow helmets during our tour. There were two additional levels below the floor that we were on. Each of those floors was only a few feet high, not even tall enough for a person to stand up straight.

Getting around on board the sub

There were four "doorways" like this one, which were pretty hard to get through. For once, I was really glad that I'm fairly short!

There were a couple of control panels similar to this one. Our guide told us that the most complex piece of equipment on board was the toilet. To flush it, you would have had to turn eight dials in the right order, or the contents of the toilet would come back up instead of going down!
