The C&O Canal Towpath in Maryland

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal begins in D.C., and extends northwest along the Potomac. There is a trail (the towpath) along 184 miles of the canal and the Potomac River. Much of the path is covered with gravel and dirt. It's a popular place for walking and biking.

During the summer months, visitors can take a mule-drawn boat ride along part of the canal. There are also places to rent canoes along the canal.
