National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Outside the basilica

The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is located near the Catholic University campus in D.C. It's the largest Catholic church in the United States, and the eighth largest in the world. It's very different from the National Cathedral, but just as beautiful!

There are 32 chapels on the main level of the basilica. They are decorated with mosaics like the one above. Many of the ceilings are decorated, too, like the one below.

We were unable to see the Crypt Church on the lower level, since Mass was being held while we were there. I'm hoping to time my next visit -- then I'll add some more pictures! :-)
